Brass is a yellow metal alloy of copper and zinc. It has been used in jewellery making in Morocco and around the world for many, many years. Brass is a traditional and sustainable choice for our jewellery, as much of the brass used today is from recycled sources. As an affordable alternative to gold, brass allows us to make original, luxurious statement pieces, at accessible prices.
Brass is a beautiful material that may need a little love from time to time, as it will tarnish and patina with age. Some people love the patina that comes with age, while others prefer to maintain a bright and shiny look. Our brass jewellery is made from solid uncoated brass. This means that it is easy to clean and the colour will not wear off.
There are quite a few different ways to clean our brass jewellery. The simplest way to clean and polish our brass jewellery is with a jewellery polishing cloth, such as Sunshine Polishing Cloths, which are inexpensive and are readily available online around the world. You'll find these cloths useful for your other jewellery pieces too. For any stubborn tarnish, gently use the fine steel wool we include in our brass jewellery packaging.
All of our brass pieces can also be polished with a brass cleaner (like Brasso) and a soft cloth or paper towel.
To clean using ingredients you may already have at home, follow the steps below:
1. In a small bowl, mix 1 part water and 1 part lemon juice.
2. Soak desired brass piece in mixed solution for 5 min.
3. Rinse thoroughly with water.
4. Dry immediately with a soft cloth and leave to air dry completely.
5. Buff gently with a soft clean cloth.
To delay tarnishing, keep your jewellery away from moisture, steam, excessive heat and chemicals (soaps, perfumes, deodorants and cosmetic lotions). Always apply lotions and sprays prior to putting your jewellery on. Store your jewellery in a safe, dry place.
Some of our brass jewellery incorporates leather or has leather neck straps. Simply wipe the leather clean with a soft damp cloth as needed.
